The Allure of Wanton Cove

The Allure of Wanton Cove

This is a lovecraftian horror game.  My writing style has little in common with H.P. Lovecraft, so instead I am approaching the story from more of a Noir style.  That said, this story is intended to be the same kind of horror.  Its meant to capture both the dark and hopeless terror and to share in the Cthuhlu Mythos.

If you like the game, please click "Like this game" or make a small pledge over on Patreon, as it gives me some idea of how many people are actually interested in the project!

Patreons:

-Free version of the game includes ALL of the newest content.

-Get access to the Cheat Menu at just $1!

-Get access to WIP art and sketches at $5

-See finalized art, and get access to test builds of the game $10!

-AND you'll hear details about releases and future projects there before anywhere else!

This game includes two builds at any given time:

The Patreon build, which includes the same content as the public build with the exception of a cheat menu in the sidebar that allows you to adjust stats, add money, add taint/depravity/mutation/madness, for the sake of making it easier to explore the game's content.

The Public build which is the most recent content for the game in its entirity.

"Liking" a game is a great way to show an author support, and many of us use it as a way of guaging support for our games.  If you enjoy someone's game, take a moment to show a little support for the author, and the game, but clicking "Like this game."

NOTE

 Take a second to look at the downloads on the side.  Each has a note attached to them.  The Public version is free to the public.  The Patreon version requires a pledge.  Please stop reporting the Patreon version as broken just because you can't be troubled to read the note.

V.94a

Should resolve several minor bugs.

V.94

-Includes 4k words of new content, new art, and the long awaited answer to what happened to Tom, . . .

You're a washed up ex-detective, living your life one bottle at a time when your old partner and estranged friend comes knocking.  His son has gone missing, the police wont persue the case, and he's run out of leads, so he comes looking to call in an old favor.

You hear him out, even if you have no intention of helping him out.  But then he offers you the only clue he has to the whereabouts of his son.  A hand written letter with a return address of Wanton Cove, the very name of which dregs up memories of the last horrible case you worked, a case that was never solved.

Not an actual walkthrough, but more how to get the most out of this game:

-Turn the lights out and play this game at night when its dark outside.

-Play some scary music, like a soundtrack from Silent Hill, or let run the ambient sounds from a horror game.  Set the music soft so that you can hear it just over the sound of your breathing.

Just to let you know, only one of the Patreon links takes you to a pay version one the other is to a free version.  Check the notes with each.    The free version is merely hosted over on Patreon, but anyone can download it free of cost.  Only difference between the two versions it that the Patreon version includes a Cheat Menu in game.

Glad to hear that you like the game.  Sad to hear that you're having trouble with playing on mobile.  I don't actually have a mobile phone or anything like that to test mobile divices on, but when I've talked with people in the past, I've been told that removing the background images from the game will fix the issue you are having.  Hope that helps.

@GreatTJ

Must be something about the game that you enjoy if you keep coming back to play it time and again.  That said, lets get to the bigger issue:  At the moment, the story is focused primarily on a single story within the setting, even though there are several plot hooks within the story that I intend to go back and address in more detail once the primary path is complete.  I strongly suspect that as some of the secondary stories start to unfold, you will find a much more fulfilling environment to enjoy.  At the same time though, I'd like to think I'm open to suggestions and feedback.  If you think there are ways that the game can be improved, by all means, please let me know.  You're always welcome to either post in the game's discussion thread, or even send me a message.

@Let

Thank you for the comments, though they would have probably been more fitting to the discussion thread than "review" status.  This said, the game currently ends on Day 7 and has no further content after that time.  Additionally, the scene you mentioned that is missing the link was reported recently, and I just got it fixed yesterday.  The fix for the missing link will appear in the next release of the game (Soon.)  Spelling mistakes are always a concern, and I fix them as I find them or they are pointed out to me.  If you know of specific spelling/grammar errors, please report them in the game's discussion thread (Preferably by copy/pasting the scene to a post, then pointing out the mistake.  This would make it very easy to run down and fix.  Too often someone will mention a random spelling error but not give specifics.  Without context, it would require for me to sift through more than a quarter million words of content to seek out one random mistake, which is a collossal undertaking.)  If you give me enough information to run down mistakes, I tend to make fixes a priority whenever I sit down to work on the game.

Glad to hear that you otherwise enjoyed what is there so far.  The game is still a work in progress, seeing a new release every 2-3 weeks.  Check back regularly for updates!

@Midnight_Omni

You're right. at the moment, the plot is fairly focused, even though there are plans to expand it considerably once the primary path through the game is complete.  Rest assured, once the game reaches V1.0, the game will begin to expand outward instead of simply having a primary path through the game.

As for Futa Apocalypse, that wasn't abandoned in favor of this.  The game became massively unwieldy (It was my first real game, and it was a learning experience.  I learned a LOT about how NOT to organize a game with that project.) and when faced with both the frustration of trying to work within the mess I created, and the surging popularity of this project, I found myself spending more and more time working on this instead.  I want to return to the setting eventually, though it remains on the back burner for the time being.

I'm glad to hear that you've gained at least some enjoyment from this project so far, and I hope that as the game continues to grow, that your opinion of the project will warm.

@ibstudent220

First, thank you for reporting the problem.  I appreciate it, every time someone points out a mistake, no matter how small, it helps improve the game.  I just updated game's links with the fix shortly before I saw your "Review" and if you try redownloading, you should be able to play the game normally.

Second, this is a "Review" area, not a bug report area.  I don't check here often as the conversation thread is where people are supposed to post any problems they encounter.  In the future, please post there as it will both reserve the Review section for its intended purpose AND by posting in the game's discussion thread I will notice your comment much sooner and be able to address the issue in a timely manner.

@revv

Eventually yes, at the end of the game, I have two (Possibly three, not completely sure yet.) endings planned, one of those will be a low/no corruption ending.  That ending will not include any physical transformation though.  Glad to hear you are enjoying the game so far!

@derpicus

There are a couple of scenes associated with the current endings in the game that involve pregnancy.  I however have no intention of adding it as an active mechanic within the setting.

@faggyanna

Higher praise I have rarely heard.  Thank you.

True, the development has been slow, and has dragged out over about two years now.  However, you'll also notice that development has increased significantly in the last few months, more then doubling the game's size in that time.  Also, releases have gone from every few months, to about every three weeks now.  Next update (.78) should be out by this time next week and is currently in the testing phase.  AND, version .7 took us into day 5, not day 4.  ;)

At present, I'm trying to add about .5 to the build number of the game every month.

Thank you for the heads up, as well as the PM.  I appreciate your insights and the time you must have invested digging through the ugly coding I do.  Looking into it now and hope to have a new build up in the morning.

@puk1

Thank you for the review.  I'm glad that you're enjoying the game so far.

The white goo is not bird shit, . . . And at present, day two presents the last of the new content, and only part of the day two content at that.  Most of the development so far has been related to the mechanical and filler ends of things, meaning that nearly all future content will be story driven in nature.  There are presently five scenes remaining to be written for day 2, and if all goes well, the update that completes day 2 should be out by year's end.

As for secondary TFs, there is actually a second TF mechanic planned for the game.  Since the catalyst for that secondary TF does not appear until day 4, the material associated with that TF will wait until that time as well.

Keep your eyes on the game's discussion thread for updates.  When there is news about progress towards an update, or when there is new updates, that information will become available there.

@Eric1986

First, thank you for the flattering review.  I'm very happy that you have enjoyed the story thus far.  I hope that the story can continue to live up to your expectations as it continues to grow.

As for the Save function, there is a "Saves" option in the sidebar on the left hand side of the screen beneath the story related information.  You should be able to click on that at any time, then choose the save option in the save slot you want to use.  If you want to save over an old save, you first delete the old save, then save over the same slot.  You should be able to save  at any time during the game.

And just for a heads up, its looking increasingly likely that I'll be releasing a small content/major mechanical, update in the next week.

@KandiKane

Thank you for the feedback and the generally good review.  I enjoyed reading it very much.

I'd love to see you drop by the discussion thread for this game and share some of your thoughts and impressions in more detail.

About the NPCs, there's a lot of work to be added to several of them still.  A few are starting to flesh out, while others are pretty bare bones still.  Rest assured that I intend to make them all significantly more fleshed out as the game continues to grow. (And yes, some of them, in their current version, ARE just there for the clues they can provide.  ;) )

Thank you for the feedback on the TF elements as well.  I'd love to hear which descriptions you feel are a little lacking so I can go back and give them another look, and possibly a rewrite.  I also just made a note for myself to go back and check out the "You" descriptions to see if I can make any improvements there.

Thank you again for the review and feedback.  Its appreciated.

@Merc.Wolf

Its Chrome.  Chrome made some changes in their most recent update that is causing Twine games to not run properly.  To the best of my knowledge, the only ways around this is to click the "Play in Browser" button on the database page, or to run it in a different browser.

V.0.19d

@TheeSpongeman

At this point in time, you should receive ambient events fairly regular as you explore Wanton Cove.  That said, there are only a couple of story related events written into the story so far.  Up to this point in development, most of the work that has gone into the game has been mechanical and/or filler material in preparation of the real work.  Starting with the next update, the bulk of all new content will have a heavy emphasis on story driven content.

PS:  Thank you for expressing your concern, but in the future, it may be more appropriate to make that kind of post in the game discussion thread, clearly labeled on the left hand of your screen, where it can be addressed in amore fitting setting.  After all, this area is for "Reviews" not for "I'm unsure if I'm missing something, can someone help?"

------------------------------

V.0.10b

@TremorFang

Actually, the skills were used fairly extensively in the .10 update.  While the game doesn't mention when a skill gets used, they can often affect how scenes play out.  Sometimes in subtle ways, and sometimes in obvious ways.  For example:  Perception scores will affect how much you notice about a scene, or how much of someone's body language you pick up on.  Your Brawn score affects if you are able to break the Church door to get in, or if you just embarrass yourself.

Every skill except Firearms and Occult saw use in this version, may of those multiple times.

I'm really glad you're enjoying the game, and thank you for the review!

Dont worry, there will be plenty of tentacles by the time I'm done.

So I was gonna recommend this game in a discord that I frequent and send a bunch of people to go download and play this game, but I noticed the free download link has been removed and only links to the patreon remain, so I can't just send a link and give exposure to this game anymore. I love the writing and I want it to succeed, it's just dissapointing that the downloads gone now. I'm aware that the play online button is still there for people with accounts but a lot of people don't have accounts and thus will just skip over this project and never give it a chance.

Really enjoying the game, but on mobile, some pages have a white background and light grey text. It's extremely hard to read. Other pages show the regular black background with white text.

I'd love to progress in the game, but it strains my eyes too much.

Pretty great so far but for some reason sleeping has become unavailable and there is a glitched incounter with "the orld sailor you saw before" after they have turned into a fish person and they run off where there is no continue botton, the only way to get out of it i've found is to save and then load that save, but this means it no longer achknowledges the encounter.

there were also a few minor spelling mistakes, two, one with a wrong first letter and another which misspelled boot.

Let me start by saying that this is a well-written and crafted game with an outstanding, detailed setting. I've played it to the end of content at least 5 times since it was initially released as an alpha, and try to make a point to check it out again every few months. That out of the way, I've... never really liked it.

I think my biggest problem with this game is that it has a clunky, laborious open world system that it doesn't really do anything with. To progress from one plot point to the next you have to click through several different areas, and with each area transition you are interrupted by a scene transition which is yet another click. I know the author did it this way in order to try and set the atmosphere, but the frustration of having to click 6-odd times to get from the inn to the mansion builds, especially later on in a playthrough when story events become more sparse and you find yourself just wandering around town, thinking "did I miss anything? Is there any content left that I haven't uncovered?"

It's a game that never fails to maintain my attention. When i start playing it, I spend hours playing until I'm pretty sure I can't progress anymore. However, it rarely manages to sustain my interest. When I finish a playthrough of Wanton Cove, I often find myself... wanting for more than I got.
